Bilzen is a small Belgian town in the province of Limburg between Hasselt and Maastricht. Archaeological findings from prehistoric and Roman times support an early settlement in this region. The town was recognised as such in the mid-13th century and it was also at that time that a beguinage was founded along the Demer river. In addition, the town became part of the Principality of Liège in 1366. Finally, although it has been subject to several destructions in the course of its history, today it has a welcoming historic centre.
