Well America online/AOL is still around and I'm not happy about what was going on with my moms email account. • AOL is a online service provider and web portal based in New York. It's a brand marketed by Oath, a subsidiary of Verizon Communications. AOL was one of the first pioneers of the Internet in the mid-1990s, and the most recognized brands. It provided dial-up service to millions of Americans, as well as providing a web portal, e-mail, instant messaging and later a web browser following its purchase of Netscape. At the crux of its popularity, AOL purchased Time Warner in the largest merger in U.S. history. AOL rapidly declined thereafter, partly due to the loss of dial-up to broadband. AOL spun off from Time Warner in 2009 and Tim Armstrong was appointed as the new CEO. Under his leadership, the company invested in advertising technologies and media brands. • AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications for $4.4 billion on June 23, 2015.
