In this long-form video, uncover the history of ethanol in Brazil. • Ethanol, obtained by fermenting sugar cane, is a thriving industry in Brazil. The country produces 32 million litres a year, making it the world's 2nd largest producer. Since the 1970s, it has been used mainly as a fuel in cars. • 70% of cars in Brazil are flexfuel , meaning they can run on 100% ethanol as well as gasoline. A feature that enables Brazil to avoid many CO2 emissions. • At the Sao Manuel plant, we visited farms with 57,000 hectares of sugar cane. To produce ethanol, they collect the sugar cane and extract a juice. This juice is used 55% to make sugar and 45% to make ethanol. Yeast is added to the sugarcane juice to produce alcohol, the same process used to make beer. • The advantage of this production method is that everything can be reused: water, sugar and fibre. The water is recycled in the process, and the fibre is burned to produce electricity. What's more, according to Livia Ignacio of the international organization Bunsucro, sugarcane cultivation has no impact on deforestation problems in Brazil, occupying only 1.2% of the country's land area. • Brazil is a leader in the manufacture of new generation ethanol. We were given access to Raizen's Costa Pinto site, the only one in the world at this stage to produce ethanol from bagasse, the fibrous residue of sugarcane. This technology produces twice as much ethanol from the same planted area and has a carbon footprint 30% smaller than that of its 1st-generation sibling. This so-called cellulosic ethanol should play an important role in decarbonizing aviation and shipping in the years to come. • Beatrice Cordiano, our energy expert, and Mélanie de Groot, our reporter, travelled to the São Paulo region to bring you this report. • ⚙️ Activate the subtitles by clicking on Settings! • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Discover our website: • https://www.energy-observer.org/ • Discover our Energy Observer Solutions platform: • https://www.energy-observer.media/ • Subscribe: • http://bit.ly/EnergyObserverYT • Follow us: • http://bit.ly/EnergyObserverIG • http://bit.ly/EnergyObserverTW • http://bit.ly/EnergyObserverFB • http://bit.ly/EnergyObserverLI
