Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage: A Journey to Purify the Heart and Soul • About 1,200 years ago, the Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) completed a pilgrimage around the island of Shikoku in the belief that it would rid people's lives of evil and calamity. His harrowing journey further spread the Buddhist religion and established the sacred pilgrimage sites of Shikoku which people still visit today. After his journey, Kukai's most faithful disciples followed in his footsteps, traveling to visit the same sacred temples; this is believed to be the start of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage tradition. • The full Shikoku pilgrimage route covers a distance of 1,450 kilometers (901 miles).
