Franz Liszt wrote his second cantata on themes by Beethoven (S. 68) in 1870, one hundred years since the composer's birth in 1770. For the event, Liszt held a festival at which the cantata was performed, to which he invited Saint-Saëns. Not long after hearing the cantata, Saint-Saëns composed his improvisation. The beginning of piece is an arrangement of the third movement of Beethoven's 'Archduke' piano trio. The piece also quotes the first movement of Beethoven's 'Eroica' symphony in the later allegro moderato section (7:54). Saint-Saëns' piece is a culmination of three generations of musical geniuses, with the wonderful themes by Beethoven and the virtuosity of Saint-Saëns, who was greatly inspired by Liszt. • pf: Geoffrey Burleson • original audio: • Improvisation sur la Beethoven-Cantat...
