The Ilyushin Il-28 (Russian: Ильюшин Іл-28) (NATO reporting name: Beagle and Mascot for the Il-28U trainer) was a jet-powered bomber originally built for the Soviet Air Force, and was the first aircraft of its type to enter large-scale production in the USSR. It was also built in China as the Hong H-5. Estimated production numbers for both types range between 2,000 and 6,000, with hundreds still in service, 40 years after the first Il-28 entered service. • The aircraft has a conventional structure, with high, non-swept wings, with the engines mounted underneath. The bombardier is located in the glazed nose, and the other end of the fuselage houses a gun turret with two machine guns. These features were similar to the bombers of World War II that had preceded it, but the swept-back tailplanes and bubble cockpit with ejection seat were more reminiscent of aircraft of its own time, making it a mix of old and new design features. • The Il-28 was widely exported and served in the air forces of some 20 countries, ranging from members of the Warsaw Pact to the Middle East and Africa. Egypt was an early customer, and attacking Egyptian Il-28s on the ground was a primary task of the Israeli Air Force during the Suez Crisis, Six Day War and Yom Kippur War. The Soviet Union was preparing to assemble Il-28s for Cuba in Cuba itself, but this was halted by the Cuban Missile Crisis, after which Nikita Khrushchev agreed to withdraw them. The Il-28 was also used over Vietnam and by the Soviets in Afghanistan. Four ex-Egyptian Il-28s and 2 ex-Soviet Il-28s were used, with Egyptian personnel, by Nigeria in the Biafran war. Il-28s from Yemen also took part in this civil war. Finland also received four aircraft between 1961 and 1966.
