In this video, I will discuss this watch, the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date. I've been wearing it for several days and I adore it! • Let me tell you why. • Located approximately 40 minutes, south of Dresden, is the watchmaking town of Glashütte. It is the home of Glashutte Original as well as several other watch firms, including two of my favourites, A. Lange Sohne and NOMOS. • But for now, let's focus on this watch, starting with the dial. The SeaQ Panorama Date is offered with a choice of dials, this is example is the reed green option and has a varnished finish. • Unusually, the dial is made in-house at the firms dial facility in Pforzheim. This is very unusual as most watch brands outsource the dials to third party specialists. The resultant dial is gorgeous. • The hour and minutes are lined with white Super-LumiNova which emits a blue hue in dim light. The minute hand has a prominent triangular tip, aiding readabilty. The centre seconds features a lollipop, again aiding readability, and features a counterweight presented in the shape of the brand's logo. • The hour markers employ a combination of Arabic numerals batons and again coated with Super Luminova. But the highlight of the dial is the panorama date. Unlike a conventional date display that features one disc positioned to the edge of the dial, the panorama date employs two discs, one for tens and one for units. • It's a far more complex and costlier approach as the discs need to collaborate in order to display the prevailing date. However, the result is a wide, highly legible date indication. • Unusually with this large date display, there are no windows framing the tens and units and both discs are presented at the same height. Its only when you look closely that you notice a small curving line, that you realise there are actually two discs. • The sapphire crystal has curved edges. When the dial is viewed from the side it creates a slightly distorted view of the dial which I find particularly interesting. However, look at the dial face on and it is eminently simple to read. • Housed in a stainless steel case, the watch measures 43.20mm in diameter and feels wonderful on the wrist. It has a case thickness of 15.65mm and looks like a robust divers' watch. Indeed, this model is water resistant to 30 bar, features a unidirectional rotation with ceramic inlay and to quote the brand: • It 'Meets all the requirements that DIN 8306 and ISO 6425 place on professional diving watches'.It has a screwed crown nestling between the shoulders of crown protector. When the crown is unscrewed, a small red circlet becomes visible. You may notice this when using the hacking seconds. • The hacking seconds allows you to halt the balance so that you can synchronise the watch with a reference clock. Push the crown back in and the balance burst back into life. The watch is mainly satin brushed but includes sumptuous, gleaming bevelled edges. • Straight brush with gleaming bevels • The model is available on a steel bracelet, a fabric strap or, as in the case, a rubber strap. I love this rubber strap, its offered in a choice of folding clasp or pin buckle. Personally, I would be happy with the pin buckle which is a little cheaper. • Unlike traditional divers' watches, which typically featured a solid caseback, this model is equipped with a sapphire caseback, affording views of the movement within. And what a gorgeous movement it is. • The Calibre 36-13 is an automatic movement. It features a skeletonised rotor with 21K gold mass positioned to its outer edge. The features a three-quarter plate, a feature found on many watches made in Glashütte. By using a three-quarter plate, instead of a series of small bridges, there is less potential for flex, providing a more stable form of construction. • Whereas most watches have an index adjuster, this model has a free sprung balance with 4 weights positioned on the rim of the balance. This form of regulation is technically superior, delivering better accuracy, while shocks are less likely to compromise the regulation of the watch. A traditional swan neck for making small adjustments to counter any beat error. • The balance features a silicon hairspring, again allowing the brand to achieve greater levels of precision. The brand also state the watch is 'Subjected to an intensive 24-day test that goes beyond the strict requirements of the German chronometer standard' • Finishing includes Glashutte ribbing, bevelled edges and numerous polished parts. In fact even the screws are polished to mirror-like gleam. The movement also has a 100 hour power reserve. • Angus Davies talks in detail about this watch and complements his video review with a detailed written feature on escapementmagazine.com • https://escapementmagazine.com/ •   / escapementmagazine   •   / escapementukcom   •   / escapement-uk-com   • https://www.pinterest.co.uk/escapement/ •   / escapementuk
