Our Wine Director, David Allen MW, visits the iconic Marques de Riscal Estate in the Rioja Region of Spain. Here he tastes their 2016 Gran Reserva Rioja with the backdrop of their unique Frank Gehry designed hotel. • The company was founded in 1858 by Camilo Hurtado de Amézega, the Marqués de Riscal. He had been living in Bordeaux and decided to bring French winemaking techniques back to his estate in Elciego. His wines became so popular that wire was stretched over the bottles to combat forgery, a feature that remains on many Rioja wines today. Over 150 years later, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest bodega of the Rioja appellation. • The Gran Reserva style requires at least 2 years ageing in barrel and then a further 3 years ageing in BOTTLE (david says barrel in the video, I hope you can forgive him it was a long flight!).
