Giuseppe De Vito, an engineer and entrepreneur hailing from Milan, who lived from 1924 to 2015, was not only a collector and art historian but also a generous patron of the arts. His passion centered on the seventeenth-century Italian art movement known as the “Seicento,” particularly Neapolitan painting. De Vito embarked on his collecting journey in the late 1950s, amassing a remarkable collection of sixty-four paintings. This exhibition showcases forty of these artworks, alongside an extensive collection of documents, including photographs, books, and letters. • De Vito's acquisitions were driven by his profound understanding of art history and his meticulous research. His choices were influenced by a rigorous scientific approach, drawing upon bibliographic sources and archival materials. In addition to his collecting pursuits, De Vito, like many art historians, played a pivotal role in curating exhibitions and generously loaned pieces from his collection to museums and galleries in both Italy and abroad. • Beyond his collecting endeavors, Giuseppe De Vito was a prolific author, recognized as a leading authority on Neapolitan art from the seventeenth century. He authored a total of seventy-two published works, delving into various artistic genres, particularly still life, and shedding light on the careers of artists such as the Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds and Antonio de Bellis. In 2012, he acquired one of Antonio de Bellis's significant works, “Christ and the Woman of Samaria.” • In 1982, De Vito established and subsequently directed an annual journal, “Ricerche sul 600 napoletano” (Research on the Neapolitan 17th century), aimed at fostering research into Neapolitan art, particularly among young historians. • In 2011, together with his wife, De Vito founded the “Fondazione Giuseppe e Margaret De Vito per la Storia dell'Arte Moderna a Napoli,” headquartered in the Villa di Olmo near Florence. This villa, which served as his final residence, now houses his invaluable collection and the extensive documentary materials he painstakingly assembled over the years. • • (Background Music) • Leonardo Vinci, Flute Sonata D-Dur / D-Major • Adagio, Allegro, Largo, Pastorella, Presto • Franziska Kannewischer-Fisch, Flute, Praxedis Hug-Rütti, Harpe • CC BY • • #GiuseppeDeVito #peinturenapolitaine #Seicento #collectionneur #historiendelart #mécène #ingénieur #entrepreneur #Milan #collection #exposition #photothèque #bibliothèque #correspondance #histoiredelart #méthodescientifique #archives #artistes #Caravage #GiovanniBattistaCaracciolo #JusepedeRibera #Rubens #Poussin #PaoloFinoglio #MassimoStanzione #MaîtredelAnnonceauxbergers #Cavallino #AndreaVaccaro #AntonioDeBellis #baroque #MattiaPreti #LucaGiordano #Naples #contexte #BataillesetCortèges #AnielloFalcone #MiccoSpadaro #Naturemorte #LucaForte #PaoloPorpora #Ruoppolo #Recco
