Thirty five years on, it is regarded as one of the director's greatest works and one of the last products of New American Cinema. A chilling portrait of celebrity worship, a biting satire of show business and a love/hate letter to the weirdos of his native city; the film also marked the end of Scorsese's auteur period and the beginning of the 'pro' phase of his career.
