Please message me if there is a problem with this video. • Verdi Requiem Royal Festival Hall • conductor: James Levine • Fleming sang Verdi's requiem several times in the middle of her career, and is here captured in concert with Levine. She is in glorious voice, her instrument fully commensurate with the extreme demands that Verdi places on the soloist, from the fearful dramatic outbursts to the eerily calm lyricism and glistening floated high Bb of the Requiem Aeternam (starting 4:30). There is another live performance on youtube from 2001 with Pappano at the Barbican hall, filmed the day her voice teacher (Beverley Peck Johnson) had died. • Fleming's year 2000 studio recording with Gergiev is even more fiercely dramatic than in this reading, in line with Gergiev's high drama vision of the work. I highly recommend listening to that recording too. But this remains a superb live account of the final movement of Verdi's masterpiece. Enjoy!
