In this video I tap into my business lessons I have learnt during the past 30 years. I discuss the strategy of find a good business idea which is almost guaranteed to be viable. I will discuss the importance of studying your competition and matching your skill set to your business venture. I also provide a list of 50 start-up ideas at the bottom of this article. • Firstly, I must point out that there are never…. or let me rather say hardly …any new or unique business ideas. This is because most ideas have already been thought of before… or somewhere in the world someone is probably already doing it. • So instead of spending hours agonising over trying to find a unique business idea rather spend your energy on looking at existing successful businesses that you may be interested in replicating. • By following this method of looking at existing businesses, your idea is already guaranteed to a viable one as there is a proven market for your “new” business idea. So all you have to do now.. is to make sure that you distinguish yourself from the other business by running it better than those of you competitor and you should be successful. • Remember, don’t be scared of competition, look what they are doing and just improve it. • This may be easiest said than done but at least your chances of success have greatly improved when compared to trying to start an unproven concept. I have seen this happen to many entrepreneurs who may have had a unique business concepts, but the market was just not ready for them. • This is because timing the market is also a vital part of the equation. Some business ideas like Google glasses where awesome, but just ahead of their time and the market was unfortunately just not ready to accept it as people did not want to walk around with geeky looking glasses. • So.. when deciding on a business idea you should take into consideration what your skill sets are. This should guide you into a certain direction and focus your options to the types of businesses that is best suited for your ability. • For example, it you are good at cooking and enjoy spending time in the kitchen, well then how about looking into starting a restaurant or a catering business? Or if you are a rock climber and skilled in abseiling how about a window cleaning business for tall buildings? • Now similarly to your skill set.. you should self-examine your personality to see which business idea would be a best fit for your personality. • If you are a person that loves dealing with people and you get your energy from interacting with people, well then this should guide you in a direction which will ensure that you interact with people. How about a tour guide? • Another good tip is to look for problems. Preferable ones that you have encountered yourself and start looking for solutions on how a business can be developed around resolving the problem. • In the process, I would suggest you speak to as many people as possible in order to get their input to develop the idea even further. Don’t be afraid of someone “stealing” your idea. Most people never get past just talking about a new business. • As Edison said it is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. So talk to people get their input and develop your business plan. Don’t just talk to family of friends who will say “that a good idea” in order not to hurt your feelings. • Be kind to yourself, give yourself time. Write down your ideas and slowly develop your business plan which I will discuss in the next video. • 1. Home Contractor • 2. Lawn Care Specialist • 3. Free-lance Writer • 4. Blogger • 5.
