But these devices, also known as personal emergency response systems, aren’t all the same. • Some are as large, while others fit on your wrist. Some only work when you’re home, while others will protect you no matter where you go… and track you every step of the way. • Basically, a medical alert system (#medicalalertsystem) allows you to communicate with professionals who can send help, so they all need a microphone and a speaker. Cheaper versions use your phone line, while more advanced units use cellular networks. • You don’t need cell service or a cell phone to use the ones that operate wirelessly. But you do need a landline to use the ones that operate on a phone line. • Using a medical alert system (#medicalalertsystem) is different from dialing 911. With fall detection, many medical alert systems (#medicalalertsystem) can call for help even if you can’t! • Many systems offer a pendant with a built-in accelerometer as an option. When it registers a quick drop, the service will call you to make sure you’re OK. If you don’t answer, because you’ve knocked yourself out, for example, help will come. • So medical alert systems aren’t just reactive. They can be proactive as well. In fact, some can call you every day just to make sure you’re OK or send reminders to take your medicine. Can your 911 do that? Besides connecting via cellular and landline, many medical alert systems can be divided into two categories: those that only work at home, which includes all the landline systems, and those that work outside the home. There’s even one designed to work in your car! • The home units come with pendants that can extend the range up to 1300 feet from the base, so they could work in your yard, if you have one. So, for these to work effectively, they need to be on your person at all times you’re awake. But some can be worn as a wristwatch. And fashion-conscious seniors can hide the pendant behind jewelry. • Thanks to modern technology, entire medical alert systems (#medicalalertsystem) are now shrunk into portable, wearable units. Some allow the use of pendants, while some are the pendant. They operate anywhere there’s cell signal, including inside your home, and can be used to locate you. The batteries need to be recharged but some last up to 30 days! • When you press the button on these systems, you are connected to an agent. You could tell them you’re not feeling well and to send an ambulance. You could tell them you heard a window break and to send police. If you suspect a fire, they’ll send the fire department. • Jeff Hoyt is SeniorLiving.org’s Editor-in-Chief. • For reviews of Medical Guardian's home medical alert systems, watch • Medical Guardian Home Medical Alert S... • For reviews of Medical Guardian's on-the-go medical alert systems, watch • Medical Guardian On-the-Go Medical Al... • For reviews of LifeFone's medical alert systems, watch • LifeFone Medical Alert Systems Review • For reviews of other medical alert systems, watch • Medical Alert Systems or visit https://www.seniorliving.org/medical-... • • Subscribe to SeniorLiving.org on YouTube: • / @seniorlivingorg • For the best assisted living options for your loved one: https://www.seniorliving.org/assisted... • For more tips for seniors: https://www.seniorliving.org/ • If you're interested in joining the hundreds of thousands of families who've found senior living communities on SeniorLiving.org, read the reviews on our website: https://www.seniorliving.org/housing/ • ~-~~-~~~-~~-~ • Like to save money?
