This trick only works if the starter is stuck and not able to engage the flywheel. It does NOT work on dead batteries, which sometimes ALSO produce a clicking sound - which is a relay in the starting circuit trying to close, but can't due to the dead battery, so it just clicks, several times rapidly. If the starter is the issue, it clicks one time. The relay clicking is generally up high at the fuse box containing the relay.
