The Quilt by Ismat Chugtai Critical Analysis

Ismat Chugtai, the famous Urdu writer in her mostly famatorious 😁 short story The Quilt explains the implied sexuality through the characters of Nawab Sahib and his showcase wife Begum Jaan. The implied homosexuality and lesbianism hint at the basic desire, practically insatiable. The imagery and symbols through the representation of Rabbu's skin, the shadow of the quilt, Begum Jaan's itch, etc. point out the clarity of the writer's genius. The motif of heat is also suggestive to signify the character of Begum Jaan. The lack that Begum Jaan suffers, makes her robust to have sexual affair with her masseuse. • The trauma of the narrator is also suggestive in the story. The child narrator is not that naive that she can not understand anything, however, she is not old enough to understand the implied and obtrusive sexuality. The irony in the story is also adaptive. The narrator remembers her Amma's words about women's segregation and that proves fatal because the narrator, although staying with Begum Jaan, is molested by the same aunt. It is not the men who behave wrong with her, but rather a female and kin who misbehaved. • The story raised a huge uproar to figure out the implied sexuality.
