The Load Bearing Beams podcast covers the history of the original SCREAM (1996) film. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson had the idea for the project, originally called Scary Movie, while watching a TV special about the serial killer Danny Rolling. He wrote the script in three days and sold it to Miramax/Dimension. • The studio signed Wes Craven as a director. Craven, having recently directed a meta movie of his own—WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE (1994)—was initially reluctant to return to the horror genre, but he was convinced by the cleverness of Williamson's script. • During production, however, Craven faced an incredible amount of interference from executive producer Bob Weinstein. The podcast relates Weinstein's unreasonable demands of filming scenes with the killer four times, each time with a different mask, until Weinstein could settle on a mask he liked. • We also explain how Postmodern philosophy influenced movies and TV in the '90s, causing self-reflexive and meta movies and shows to proliferate. • This is the history segment from Load Bearing Beams episode 131.
