Dedicated to Mathias Spahlinger and premiered by the Ripieno Ensemble at the China-ASEAN Music Festival in Nanning, Guangxi in June 2017, with • AJ Villanueva, conductor; • Stefanie Quintin, soprano; • John Owen Castro, flute; • Danelle Dionisio, clarinet; • Sara Matsuura, piano; • Patricia Erika Poblador, violin; and • Joseph Emmanuel Hernandez, violoncello. • • The word tagulaylay is associated with various meanings, among them a plaintive melody suggesting lament, used in the Philippine pasyon traditions, especially in the Tagalog region in Luzon Island.
