Dr. Biff F. Palmer, a Professor of Medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, reviews his article appearing in the March 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he describes the challenges of management of hyperkalemia, an electrolyte abnormality with potentially life-threatening consequences. He notes that despite various guidelines, no universally accepted consensus on best practices for hyperkalemia monitoring or for the management of acute or chronic hyperkalemia exists. Based on discussions with his 13 coauthors, he offers insights into best practices that incorporate classification and monitoring for hyperkalemia, optimization of renin– angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) therapy, and the use of the newer potassium binders.
