Today, our dapper Brownells Firearm Support Technician with the info, Caleb Savant, shines the spotlight on two semi-auto pistol cartridges: the 10mm Auto and the .40 S W. The metric round was developed in the early 1980s by Jeff Cooper, while the .40 S W was introduced in 1990 by Smith Wesson and Winchester. The physical difference between them is case length, .992 for 10mm vs .850 for .40 S W. Diameter of bullet, case, and rim are all the same. The 10mm uses a large pistol primer, the .40 a small pistol primer. The .40 S W is popular for military, law enforcement, and personal defense applications. The 10mm Auto is also used in law enforcement and personal defense AND has become a popular hunting round. With its bigger case volume, the 10mm Auto can hold more powder to deliver higher velocity, with a LOT more felt recoil. The smaller .40 S W produces recoil more like the 9mm Luger.
