The American Staffordshire Terrier is a tremendously popular dog in the US and ranks number 85 of 197 on the AKC's (American Kennel Club) popular dog breeds. • The Amstaff is a little bigger both in height and weight than the female. They grow to a height of nineteen inches and a weight of seventy pounds. The AKC has them in the Terrier Group, as you would expect. • The American Staffordshire Terrier History • The Am Staff can trace his heritage back over two hundred years to England. Looking for a brave dog that could stand up to pain and was courageous, the breeders began crossing bulldogs and terriers, hoping they would inherit positive genes from both breeds. • The obvious imaginative naming convention turned out such names as the bull and terrier, half and half or pit dogs. At some point, someone changed the name to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. • As terrible as it may seem, these dogs were bred solely for the sport of bull-baiting or dogfighting, and even though dogfighting was banned in the early eighteen hundreds, it continued illegally. • In the late eighteenth century, the bull and terrier dogs eventually found their way over the Atlantic to the United States, where they found work as farm dogs. • In America, people knew them under a few different names, such as the Pit Bull Terrier, American Bull Terrier, and sometimes the Yankee Terrier. • Dog breeders in the States preferred a larger breed of dog than the English version. By the 1930s, the dogs were distinguished by their size difference. • In 1936 the AKC accepted their registry as the Staffordshire Terrier (it was changed again in 1972 to American Staffordshire Terrier to avoid confusion with the Staffordshire Terrier from the UK). • American Staffordshire Terrier Temperament • Respectable breeders determine the temperament of the AM Staff. He should be trustworthy and have a pleasant, reliable demeanor around humans and other animals. • AmStaffs love their family and do well living in a close-knit family; they are playful and laid back. Providing they have been adequately socialized from an early age, they are excellent around young children. • But care should always be taken when young children or other animals are playing around dogs the size of the AmStaff. • He's no pushover when it comes to training. They are intelligent dogs, and with the intelligence comes stubbornness. They are a highly trainable breed, but it can only be accomplished by fun and treats. • Harsh treatment or any kind of bullying will result in very stoic behavior. • American Staffordshire Terrier Care • Routine exercise of one kind or another is crucial for all dogs' health, but because the AmStaff is a very athletic breed, they need a decent amount every day. • We mentioned they are intelligent, so if you adopt an AmStaff think about agility and other dog sports. You must challenge him mentally as well. They will need at least two special exercise sessions each day, so we suggest dog sports because he will be training his mind and body. • If they are bored with life because of lack of stimulation, they can become very destructive, over-sensitive, and develop behavioral issues. • They have a coat that doesn't require much attention, but AmStaffs shed quite a bit and even more during the season's change. They will need brushing regularly, and if you don't like dog hair on your soft furnishings, then you might be best brushing him every day. • If you're not quite so worried about hair in the house, then once or twice a week will suffice. • Bathing should really be only once every two months; the brushing you give them will spread the oils over the coat and keep it in good condition. Of course, pay attention to the length of the dog’s nails, don't let them get too long. • A good rule of thumb is that if you can hear the click of your AmStaff’s nails on a hard floor, they need cutting. • The American Staffordshire Terrier Final Words • The AmStaff is a 'Pit Bull' breed and is part of Breed Specific Legislation. It's crucial to understand this if you are hoping to adopt one. Your local laws will explain if this dog is allowed as a pet in your state or county. • You might also find that insurance companies will not insure you. • You can read more about American Staffordshire Terrier here - https://chihulife.com/american-staffo... • #chihulife #dogs #dogsawesome #dogsvideos #americanstaffordshireterrier #staffordshireterrier #terrier
