Should I Have an AIS Transponder or an AIS Receiver on My Boat

I just moved my boat to an area that has a lot of ship traffic so I am looking into installing an AIS transponder. writes Keith. I thought about only going with a receiver-only however, after watching your videos on AIS I decided to go with a transponder unit so my boat will be seen and I can see the vessels in the area as well. I noticed you recommend the VesperXB-8000 as well as the Em-Trak B 950. Which unit you would recommend?
