Here’s our next word of the day in May – it’s discrepancy. This word has four syllables, with the stress on the second one – dis-CREP-an-cy. Discrepancy. • A discrepancy is a difference between two things – usually two pieces of information – that should match or that are supposed to be the same. Let’s say you’re going to buy something in a store and the price tag says $10 but when you go to the cash register and scan it, the price comes up in the system as $12 – there’s a discrepancy in the price. It should be the same on the price tag and in the system, but it’s different. • Or if you’re going to a party and one friend says the party starts at 7PM but another friend says it starts at 9PM, that’s a discrepancy. When you have two employees at a company who have the same amount of experience and the same job responsibilities, but one has a higher salary than the other, then there is a discrepancy in their pay. • Think about a time when you’ve noticed a discrepancy, two amounts or pieces of data that should match but they were different. When we discover a discrepancy, we usually have to investigate more to find out which piece of information is correct, and why the difference or error happened. • Got it?
