Learn the 4 phases of how to properly ethically use spurs. This training is for beginners and experts alike. Whether you are working with a brand new horse or spending time on an old well trained horse. • Joe talks about one of the most controversial subjects in horsemanship, using spurs. This video shows you how why correctly using spurs will accelerate your horses learning and your horsemanship. • Joe shows you the 4 phase method of humanely effectively using spurs. • Phase 1- Turn your toes out, this will engage your calf muscles. Spur is not touching horse. • Phase 2 - Turn your toe down. This will further engaged calf muscle rub against the horses side. Spur not yet touching the horse. • Phase 3 - Turn your toes down further. Now your whole calf muscle is making contact and now you contact your spur to horse. • Phase 4 - Turn your toes down as far as your can. Start to roll your spur rowel to engage the desired response from your horse. • **Important - Do not kick/jab your horses rib cage with spurs/rowel. • **Important - When your horse starts gives you your desired response you need to quickly lighten back up to phase 1. • What you need to know - At some point you will need to get to phase 4. You need to be ready, willing and able to get to phase 4 when necessary.
