Like most engineers, vocal mixing was something I used to struggle with a lot. It's different because it's not something like an instrument. If the EQ is off on an instrument recording like a saxophone, most people won’t notice because it's a saxophone. The average person doesn’t hear it everyday, so they don’t know the difference between a good saxophone and a bad saxophone. It's just a saxophone. But if somethings off with a vocal mix, people can tell. We hear voices everyday of our lives, so we know what a voice is supposed to sound like. Unfortunately a microphone doesn’t capture the dynamic-ness of our voices the way our ears do. So we mix our vocals, to get it as close to sounding like real-life as possible. And I got pretty good at this, but there was one thing that I and most beginners always missed.
