make a morel mushroom woodturning challenge

This video is about how to make a morel mushroom on a wood lathe. It is the first in my woodturning challenge series. I was challenged to create a morel mushroom and I have never tried making one before. In fact I was only vaguely familiar with this mushroom. I started with a branch of cherry wood that my neighbor gave me and cut it into a blank on the band saw. The cherry blank was then mounted between centers to round it and get it ready to mount in the chuck. I created a dovetail tenon on one end so that I could hold it by that end and finish the top of the mushroom without moving the piece. With a 3/8 spindle gouge I did most of the general shaping of the top. I moved on to the stem and made it straight with a little base so that it could stand up. The stem was finished with a skew chisel to smooth it up. Then the tailstock was removed so that I could access the top and removed the wood with very light cuts to avoid vibration. Now it's time to carve! I did some power carving with a dremel tool and tried to make a random groove pattern to make it look like the mushroom top. A little hand sanding and spray lacquer finished up this project. I hope I did well in this challenge. • If you have another woodturning challenge let me know in the comments. • Check me out on Instagram @geiserwoodturner • here are some of my other videos • car stereo knob • • Replace your car stereo knob with wood! • walnut tortilla rolling pin • • Woodturning/ Walnut Tortilla Rolling Pin • must have items in a woodturning shop • • Must have items for a woodturning shop • how to make a magic wand • • how to make a magic wand/ woodturning • how to make a honey dipper in under 5 minutes • • how to make a honey dipper in under 5... • what lathe should I buy • • what lathe should I buy? • This video is for entertainment purposes only. geiserwoodturner is not responsible for actions that are unsafe.
