Storm Topples Trees At WCU Cullowhee

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Crews spent Thursday cleaning up after Wednesday night's storm that hit Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. • • By some accounts, 60 mile an hour winds toppled 10 trees around campus, and another nine landed on Hunter Library, poking about 60 holes in the roof. • • Debris also clogged up drainage and allowed about a foot of water to collect, some of it dripping into the library's map section. • • They actually took out the ceiling tiles to let the water come down. So, there were a few gushers that came into big buckets, Acting Dean of Library Services Becky Kornegay said. • • Despite some water damage, Kornegay says crews worked quickly to save the maps, moving them and covering them with plastic. • • More permanent repairs are underway. The university says the holes in the roof were patched up by early Thursday morning and by 4 p.m., Buzzards Roost Road near the library, which had been closed for crews to clear the trees, reopened to traffic. • • Students say the storm was loud and sudden. • • The lights kind of flashed for a bit inside the apartment and then I heard a lot of thunder, sophomore George Hernandez said. • • There was so much rain that it filled up in the middle of the streets and puddled up on the sides and stuff, and then I started getting hit with some hail, James Lucas said. • • I guess you'd call it a micro-burst or something, Travis Bramlett said who runs the nearby University Mobile Home Park. He spent the day cleaning up two downed trees that damaged his fence. • • None of his tenants were injured.
