Bob Scobey, trumpet; Jack Buck, trombone; Ellis Horne, clarinet; Harry Mordechai, banjo; Wally Rose, piano; Squire Girsback, tuba/bass; Bill Dart, drums; recorded in Oakland. • Many of these musicians played for Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena Jazz Band (YBJB) at some point in their careers. Trumpeter Watters and the band opened a jazz club in a former strip club/brothel in unincorporated El Cerrito (across the Bay from San Francisco). “Hambone Kelly’s” opened on June 20, 1947, and operated until the last performance of YBJB on December 31, 1950, when Lu Watters retired from the music business. • Bob Scobey, who had departed the band in the intervening years, leased the old Hambone Kelly’s building and opened Alexander’s on March 9, 1951. Unfortunately, he was unable to secure a liquor license (perhaps due to El Cerrito’s reformist politics at the time), and permanently closed after three months of serving soft drinks, coffee and tea. His band used the name Alexander’s as well as Bob Scobey’s Frisco Jazz Band over the next few years. • [Weary Blues, Alexander's Jazz Band, Trilon 242-A, recorded 12/1947, matrix T-1250-2] • The flip side of this disk is I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate: • SAN FRANCISCO DIXIELAND: Alexander's ... • Dixieland Playlist: • TRAD JAZZ!!!
