The winery was established in Monteforte D’Alba in 1881 by Giuseppe Mascarello. It is now managed by Mauro Mascarello (4th generation) since 1960s. • For a few decades in the twentieth century, ownership of Monprivato was divided, but it has now been reunited as a monopole under this winery. The relationship between the Mascarello family and Monprivato dates back to 1904, when Mauro’s grandfather Maurizio bought the vineyard. From that year until 1920, Maurizio made a pure Barolo from Monprivato, though, it was labelled “Barolo” only. No bottles are known to exist of that wine. • For fifty years, between 1920 and 1970, no single-vineyard Barolos were made from Monprivato by the Mascarellos. In 1970, Mauro decided to make a Monprivato cru Barolo The vineyard is 15 acres in size on a southwest-facing slope in Castiglione Falletto, Monprivato’s chalky and gray marl soils offer textbook conditions for Nebbiolo. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 30 months and in bottled a 6 months (not a Riserva as it is not matured in oak for 3 years). • Mascarello also makes a Riserva wine using grapes from the Monprivato vineyard called Cà d’Morissio • For more information about this winery, please visit their website at https://www.mascarello1881.com/en/
