A lot of my clients ask me what to expect in a therapy. so today I'm going to talk about that. Remember that each therapist is a different but I'm going to give you an overall feel about therapy. • What is therapy? Psychotherapy is known by a few different names: counseling, talk therapy, or simply, therapy. is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses, behavior (व्यवहार), thinking, relationship issue, emotional difficulties (bhavnatmak taklif). When you have tried lot of things but nothing has helped and you need to move forward, live life to the fullest. • Who are therapists? psychiatrists, psychologists, Psychiatric social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, or other licensed professionals with mental health training. • What are the different type of Therapy?: individual, group • What is the duration of each session: 45min-1 hour • How many sessions of therapy are required?: No magic number. Each individual is different and so are their concerns. So everyone takes their own time. • What about privacy and confidentiality?: privacy and confidentiality is maintained whatever is discussed with your therapist stays only between you two. confidentiality is only broken when There is threat to self Or others or there has been a case of child abuse • Will my therapist judge me? Be open to share your concerns with your therapist. They are there to listen to you. they are trained to be non-judgmental. so feel free to discuss all your concerns in detail • Will I immediately feel better after sharing my concern? • Therapy is a process. So it will take time to see change. Sometimes you might feel worse. It is because you are talking about experiences which are painful or because you feel bad for taking wrong decision. Its fine to feel that way. The thing is you are working on it • sometimes you may not feel comfortable sharing about your concerns that the therapist. Thats ok. It happens because you are letting it out to a stranger. Take sometime. But remember that the m ore you share the better it is. • What happens in 1st therapy session: • Starts with understanding your concerns. History of your problems, about family, school/work, any medical concern etc. The focus is to understand you and your concerns better. • They may or may not take notes at that time. But they ensure documentation • Goals are made. Homeworks given • What if I don't feel connected with my therapist? • It might happen in the initial session. But give some time. maybe after 2-3 sessions you start feeling connected. If you still feel distant then feel free to openly talk about the same with your therapist. They will understand your concern. Finding the right fit therapist is important. You might then reach out to other therapist. • How frequently do therapists meet their client?: Generally once a week. It may be more depending on the intensity of your concern • Payment: Like any other profession, these are services. So they are chargeable. the charge per session. payment is usually made before. there are different charges based on the therapist experience. Some type is also work on sliding scale. so do not hesitate to discuss about the sliding scale (reduced rate).
