Who or what is Britannia? Britannia is the national personification of Britain. She is depicted as a female warrior holding a trident and shield and wearing a helmet. The Roman conquest of the island began in AD 43, leading to the establishment of the Roman province known in Latin as Britannia. This Latin word referred to England and Wales. • Rule, Britannia! is a British patriotic song, originating from the 1740 poem Rule, Britannia by James Thomson and set to music by Thomas Arne in the same year. It is most strongly associated with the Royal Navy but is also used by the British Army. • Rule Britannia is also traditionally performed at the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ which takes place each year at the Royal Albert Hall, London. • Please let us know YOUR thoughts about Britannia.
