Pambanan: Statue of Shiva in the Shiva Temple (Candi Siwa) • Statue of Shiva • The Shiva statue shown in the image stands inside the inner sanctum of the Shiva Temple in the Prambanan complex located 11 miles northeast of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Shiva Temple is the main temple of Prambanan and is also the tallest among the numerous temples in the complex. • Unlike Shiva temples in India, there is no Shiva Linga in this temple. Instead, the statue of Shiva stands on top of a yoni (i.e., the square-shaped stone that has a small canal on the right), which symbolizes the womb of Shiva’s wife. The Shiva statue stands on a round lotus flower pedestal mounted within the square space of the yoni. Most Shiva Linga sculptures in India have round-shaped yonis. • The inner sanctum of the Shiva Temple has four chambers, each of which houses a statue facing a cardinal direction.
