#shorts • Have you ever heard of the Guyanas? There not in Africa, nor in Asia. There in South America. Here. Three countries, although there used to be more. There was Spanish Guyana (now part of Venezuela) and Portuguese Guiana (now part of Brazil). Guyana was a British colony that gained its independence in 1966. Suriname (or Dutch Guyana) was a colony that gained its independence from the Dutch in 1975. And then there is French Guyana and that became independent... oh wait, no it's still part of France. Believe it or not. French Guiana is an overseas department and region of France, making it an integral part of the French Republic. It has the euro as its currency and upholds French law and institutions. • Guyana should NOT be confused with Guinee-Bissau, Guinee and Equatorial Guinea (in Africa) or Papua New Guinea (in Oceania).
