Ten years before the horrible genocide broke out in Rwanda, Mary danced and sang with her African children at the Catholic high school at Kibeho in the heart of a Rwandan jungle. Mary appeared to them as “Mother of the Word.” The apparitions at Kibeho were beyond sensational, going on for months and capturing the whole nation. Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie Claire Mukangango were the first seers and the number would grow, including Segatashya, the pagan boy who saw visions of Jesus and became himself an evangelizer. The apparitions were carefully monitored by eccleastical authorities from the very beginning and Rome was kept informed. Mary made it clear that her messages here were not just for the local people but for the world.
