Welcome back! In this episode we scale a lovely mountain named Sugar Mountain, which is in southern British Columbia, or in the northeast regions of the Okanagan. The Monashee Mountains lie in between the Okanagan valley and the Kootenay region, particularly just to the west of the Arrow Lakes. Sugar Mountain needs to be added to Monashee Provincial Park, as this region is a popular trail for ATVs which degrade the landscape. In any case, a separate more secluded trail would make this a more enjoyable hike, and at the moment running into dangerous wildlife can be an issue in the region. Come prepared with bear spray! • As Sugar Mountain is the first real mountain in the Monashees, at least from the western side, Sugar Mountain peers into the grandeur of the Monashees, seeing mountain peaks such as Mount Odin, Mount Thor, Mount Niflheim, • Mount Fosthall, Roster Peak, Gates Peak (and Gates NW1), Kelly Peak, Slate Mountain, Goat Mountain (and Goat N2), Mount Severide, Mount Laag, Humility Peak, and Tranquility Peak. • Indeed, the Monashees were named poetically and with passion in the attempt of being truthful to the personality, grandeur, and scale of these wonderful mountains. When the weather turns or an injury befalls, mighty mountains reveal their dual nature. We no longer walk freely upon this benevolent God, indeed the mountain turns into an evil God. Thus the to name these mountains after Norse Gods gives respect to these mountains. • Actually, “Monashee” translates into the “Mountains of Peace.” Previously these mountains were called the “Gold Range” but the name “Monashee Mountains” was adopted on April 2, 1918 and given legal status as a place name in Ottawa under file OBF 0248. At the time of the naming, correspondence to and from BC's Chief Geographer describes “Monashee” as being Gaelic, and derived from the phrase monadh-sith, mountain of peace. • The music in this video is Sonata in B-flat major, Deutsch Catalogue 960, 2nd movement , composed by Franz Schubert. It was performed by David H. Porter. • Add me on Instagram:   / rupertmackie   • Add me on TikTok:   / rupertmac   • Onwards Upwards is a channel dedicated to documenting travels, explorations, photography, humanity, and the natural world.
