We explore the transition to sustainable energy and mobility. • The Faculty of Management, Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne is sharpening its research profile with four Key Research Initiatives (KRIs). One of them is “Sustainable Smart Energy Mobility”. It explores the interdependent transition to sustainable energy and mobility from an interdisciplinary perspective, ranging from artificial intelligence to economics to social behavior. Under the assumption that the electricity and the transportation sector are both affected by and instrumental in the effort to transform energy systems, a complicated array of economic coordination problems arises due to the increasingly distributed nature of both electricity generation and consumption, which is further complicated by weather-dependent availability profiles of wind and sun. Efficient solutions will necessitate new approaches to optimal congestion management—within electricity grids, transport networks and at the intersection of the two sectors, for example, charging electric vehicles and using the batteries in such vehicles as sources of flexibility for the electricity sector. The research of this KRI focuses on Information Technology (IT)-based mechanisms for congestion management in energy and mobility networks, efficient coordination of investment across regulated and unregulated sectors, new business models for sustainable energy and mobility, as well as flexible, distributed, weather-dependent, and versatile electricity systems: • https://wiso.uni-koeln.de/en/research...
