The summit of Mount Katmai collapsed during the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai eruption, the largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century and one of the five largest in recorded history. The caldera is more than 2000 feet (600 m) deep. The lake within it is more than 800 feet (250 m) deep and growing.
