I. Schneeglöckchen / Snowdrops (00:00) • II. Veilchen / Violets (02:05) • III. Maiglöckchen / Lilies of the Valley (04:27) • IV. Vergißmeinnicht / Forget-me-not – in memory of Dr. Russell Miller (05:58) • V. Rose / Rose (07:42) • VI. Rote Nelken / Red Carnations (09:56) • VII. Lilien / Lilies (13:08) • VIII. Chrysanthemen / Chrysanthemums (16:15) • Just as recordings and critical commentaries on her works are scarce, little published information about Dora Pejačević (1885-1923) exists outside of the Croatian language. Nevertheless, her status as the country’s first significant composer of Western classical music earns her international respect, with works ranging from vocal art songs, piano solos, and chamber music to concertos and symphonic literature. • Written when Pejačević was only nineteen years old, Blumenleben explores an emotional spectrum deeply native to the young adult, spanning innocence, nostalgia, grief, and many shades in between. Each of the eight movements features a different flower, which in turn has its own emotional symbolism. While the messages delivered by these flowers likely differed across the Western world, the recipient of any bouquet in 19th and early 20th century Europe could interpret the giver’s messages and intentions from the flowers inside, thanks to a proliferation of books on the subject. • The emotions below are based on one such book, Language of Flowers by Kate Greenaway, that has been widely published and translated throughout Europe and North America. These sentiments have served as my inspiration for each movement, and I encourage you to consider them as you experience the piece. • I. Snowdrops – hope • II. Violets – modesty, faithfulness • III. Lilies of the Valley – return of happiness • IV. Forget-me-not – forget me not • V. Rose – love • VI. Red Carnations – alas! for my poor heart • VII. Lilies – majesty, purity, falsehood • VIII. Chrysanthemums – slighted love, truth • Record live on 4 November 2023 • Bryan Recital Hall • Moore Musical Arts Center • Bowling Green State University
