Le paquebot ÎLE DE FRANCE est construit en 1927 par les chantiers Penhoët de St Nazaire pour la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. • Long de 241 mètres avec une puissance de 48 000 chevaux qui lui donnent une vitesse de 23 noeuds. • Il accueille 1786 passagers et il est le navire le plus confortable de la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. • Version après guerre du paquebot ÎLE DE FRANCE . • ÎLE DE FRANCE est inauguré le 29 mai 1927 et commence sa carrière de transatlantique. • Pendant la prohibition, l’alcool coule à flots à chaque arrivée à New-York. • Au moment de la capitulation Française le Paquebot peut rejoindre l’Indochine et se réfugie à Singapour. Il sera affecté plusieurs fois au transport de troupes. • Après la guerre, il est transformé à Saint Nazaire et perdra sa quatrième cheminée. • Son intérieur est rénové et du mobilier de NORMANDIE trouvera sa place à l’intérieur d’ ÎLE DE FRANCE . • Il viendra au secours des naufragés du paquebot ANDREA DORIA , suite à sa collision avec le Paquebot STOCHOLM le 26 Juillet 1956. • Il est surnommé le Saint Bernard des mers sauvant 1700 passagers. • Avec l’arrivée du « FRANCE » , l’heure de sa retraite a sonné. • La CGT vend le paquebot aux chantiers YAMAMOTO d’Osaka.
