The human tongue is a muscular organ located in the mouth. The tongue is primarily composed of skeletal muscle tissue, allowing for precise movements and flexibility. These muscles are responsible for actions like speech, swallowing, and manipulating food. • The surface of the tongue is covered in tiny, small bumps, called papillae. Papillae come in four various types, including filiform, fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate. These papillae house taste buds and provide texture to the tongue's surface. Papillae contain touch sensors that help us sense the texture of the food we eat. • Taste buds are specialized sensory organs located within the papillae. They contain taste receptor cells responsible for detecting different tastes, such as sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. • The tongue is kept moist by the secretion of saliva from salivary glands located in and around the mouth. Saliva helps in breaking down food and aids in the sense of taste. • The tongue is richly supplied with blood vessels and nerve endings.
