A very rare and unusual mosasaur tooth of a Stelladens mysteriosus from the Cretaceous aged Couche III in the phosphate deposits of Oued Zem, Ouled Abdoun Basin, Morocco. Unlike many of the mosasaur species from the Maastrichtian phosphates of Morocco, Stelladens is one of the rarest genera in the deposit on par with Xenodens calminechari and the rare dinosaurs washed out to sea. The odd star-shaped teeth of this marine reptile is unlike any creature to exist, and it makes sense why this morphology was considered pathological prior to its discovery. Given the large amount of mosasaur teeth that have been sold on the market, it is highly probable that there are other Stelladens teeth in collections unknowingly mislabeled as pathological mosasaurs, likely as Mosasaurus beaugei. • #stelladens #mosasaurus #cretaceous #fossil #paleontology
