Guilford Shines in Second Half to Retain Gate City Soup Bowl • In another edition of the annual Gate City Soup Bowl, the Guilford College Quakers faced the Greensboro College Pride on Saturday night at the Armfield Athletic Center. In front of a large home crowd, Guilford held Greensboro to just eight second half points, storming back to score 27, large in part to a potent rushing attack. With the 36-21 victory, it marks the seventh-straight in the series for the Quakers. • Trailing at the half, 13-9, the Quakers were pressured immediately after a Bailey Baker interception. Guilford's defense held firm and forced a three-and-out. On their next drive, facing 3rd-and-12 at his own 43-yard-line, Baker was able to find receiver Parker DeHart downfield for a large reception that eventually lead to a 64-yard score. This marked the Quakers' first lead since the 00:36 mark of the first quarter (9-7). • Greensboro's second consecutive three-and-out set Guilford up at its own 33. Two consecutive run plays, first by Baker for 19, then Joseph Brown Jr. for 17, put the Quakers deep into Pride territory at their 21. From there, the rushing attack was able to utilize the outside edge, ultimately leading to a two-yard score from Baker, extending Guilford's lead to nine (22-13) with 4:49 remaining in the third quarter. • On the very next drive, the Pride were able to move closer to midfield until back-to-back incomplete passes found them with a 4th-and-15. A miscue on the ensuing punt led to an eventual 18-yard loss, and a turnover on downs. • The Quakers took over at the Greensboro 23, where rushes from Malik Woodard and Baker led them to the two-yard line to end the third quarter. At the start of the fourth, a one-yard rush from Cory Casilac gave Guilford its third rushing touchdown on the night, the most since the 2018 season against Methodist (5). • On the Pride's next offensive drive, quarterback Alec Williams-Carr drove the team into Quaker territory, both in the air and on the ground. After an eight-yard rush brought them to Guilford's four-yard line, running back Leonard Greer carried the ball for a score, reducing the Quaker's lead to eight after a successful two-point conversion (29-21). • A quick three-and-out from Guilford forced a punt, but after Greensboro's Greer muffed the return, Tristan Bailey of the Quakers was able to recover and put the offense in its best starting position all night. From there, the rushing duo of Casilac and Woodard slowly moved the chains, and Baker threw his second touchdown of the night to receiver Jay Daniels, an 11-yard score (36-15). • Greensboro's last offensive drive took them from deep in their own territory to the doorstep of Guilford's, but the Quaker defense held strong by forcing a turnover on downs, confirming the Quaker's first win of the season by a 15-point margin. • It was a dominant rushing affair, combining for over 200 yards, the most in a single game since the 2018 season against Methodist (225). Leading the group was Casilac with 84 yards and a score. JuJu Rice led the team in receiving, finishing the night with five receptions for 60 yards. • On the defensive side, Nick Iannone had a dominant showing, with nine total tackles and two sacks. The Quaker defense forced two turnovers on the evening. • Guilford kicks off a two-game road stand, on Saturday, September 9, against the Monarchs of Methodist University.
