In a fusion of East and West, he championed an æsthetic based on song, nature and emotion tied to the proliferation of sound in silence. A fervent lover of instruments, he composed with particular pleasure for the flute, the harp and percussion, but also for the orchestra and various chamber groupings. His most striking works include the series of Hiérophonies (1969-1974), Sublimation (1971), Maya (1972), Chromophonie (1973), meditations (1977), Érosion I (1980), Flautissimo (1988), Ji-ku Jinkan (1999), Diffraction (1996), Réminiscence (1998), Monodrame III (1988) and Retour (2003). He taught composition at the École Normale de Musique in Paris until the end of his life.
