It is generally consumed in its milled form with outer layers i.e. hull bran removed. The main reason for milling is to remove the oil-rich aleurone layer (bran), which turns rancid upon storage, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. • Milled rice is Pro-vitamin-A-free and thus cause night-blindness, xerophthalmia and is estimated to kill 670,000 children under the age of 5. • #bscbotany #biotechnology #12biologyclass #11biology #recombinantdnatechnology #biotechnologyanditsapplications #goldenrice #goldenricefarm #neet #6thsemester #botany • Thus improved vitamin-A, content in major staple consumed crops an attractive alternative to fight micronutrient deficiencies. • Golden rice was contributed by two German research team headed by Ingo Potrykus of Swiss Institute of Technology in Zurich and Peter Beyer of the University of Freiburg. The scientific details of their 8 year project were first published in Science (IF =41) in 2000. Agrobacterium mediated transformation was carried out to introduce β-carotene biosynthesis. • The team has engineered Japonica rice variety by adding three genes, two of which phytoene synthase Lycopene beta cyclase is derived from Daffodil (Narcissus) and another gene CrtI, (Phytoene desaturase, Z-carotene desaturase) from bacteria, Erwinia). • Recent analysis has shown the plant's endogenous enzymes (Lycopene beta cyclase) process the lycopene to beta-carotene in the endosperm, giving the rice the distinctive yellow color for which it is named. • The original golden rice was called SGR1, and under greenhouse conditions it produced 1.6 µg/g of carotenoids. • The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international agreement which aims to ensure the safe handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health. It was adopted on 29 January 2000 and entered into force on 11 September 2003.
