Are you in your emergency medicine clerkship? Is a patient presenting with acute and severe “tearing” or “ripping” chest pain that radiates to the back? If so, tune into today's #DiagnosticsOnDemand to walk through diagnosing aortic dissection. • An aortic dissection often occurs due to long-standing untreated high blood pressure. When blood tears through the intimal layer of the aortic wall and bleeds into the muscular layer, it creates an intraluminal flap and a double lumen, which means that there is a true and a false lumen of the aorta. • Acutely, blood will flow into the false lumen because there’s less resistance, which can lead to obstruction of the true lumen. This results in malperfusion of end-organs, such as the brain, bowel, or kidneys. In addition, as blood accumulates in the false lumen with no way out, it may clot leading to the formation of thrombi. • As blood keeps flowing into the false lumen, the shear stress on the aortic wall can cause the tear to expand, or in the worst cases even lead to aortic rupture, causing mortality from cardiac tamponade or internal hemorrhage. • Learn how to assess, diagnose, and treat aortic dissection: https://osms.it/dod-aortic-dissection-yt • Check out the Osmosis from Elsevier Clinical Sciences library for free: https://osms.it/free-trial-apr24-yt • #learnbyosmosis #shorts #medicalschool #doschool #paschool #npschool #medstudent #dostudent #pastudent #npstudent #healthcare #clinicalrotations #clerkship #residency #aorticdissection #abdominalpain #emergencymedicine • Find our full video library only on Osmosis: http://osms.it/more. • Join millions of current and future clinicians who learn by Osmosis, along with hundreds of universities around the world who partner with Osmosis from Elsevier to make medical and health education more engaging and efficient.
