Although the word Triceratops means 3 horned face, this dinosaur actually only had 2 proper horns. The third horn was made out of soft proteins and wasn’t a proper horn. • There are two theories which suggest what the horns of the Triceratops were used for. First, is the horns were used to defend myself in combat against other dinosaurs • The second theory suggests that this animal’s horns served a very limited purpose in combat and was instead used during courtship rituals. • 2 – The large bony plate around the Triceratops’ is called the frill. The triceratops frill covered its neck and shoulders, and was edged with bony knobs. Its main function would have been to protect the dinosaur’s neck and shoulders. • The area beneath the skin of Triceratops’s frill was heavily vascularized (covered with blood vessels). This means that Triceratops could have flushed it with blood, thereby changing or enhancing its colour in the same way humans do when they blush. • Scientists speculate that the frill could have been used for communication, perhaps indicating an individual’s level of aggression, dominance, or other social expressions. • • 3 - The Triceratops could weigh anywhere between 6 and 12 tons. • 4 - This dinosaur measured over 10 feet in height from their feet to the top of their backs. That is as tall as a first story building. • 5 - Another interesting fact about triceratops is that almost one third of the length of the Triceratops was its skull. A typical Triceratops was approximately 26 feet long (or 8 meters), while its skull was approximately 7 feet long (or 2.33 meters long). • 6 Another fact about dinosaurs such as the Triceratops is that they had bird-like beaks and could clip off hundreds of pounds of tough vegetation every day. • 7 - This dinosaur has approximately 400 to 800 teeth during the course of its lifetime. However, it didn’t use all of these teeth at one time. It was constantly replacing them throughout its lifetime as it wore them out. • 8 - Triceratops were herbivores, meaning they ate plants and not animals or meat. They probably ate many varieties of plants and may have used their large bulk and strength to knock down trees in order to get at leaves like current day elephants. • • 9 - It is believed that the triceratops lived during a portion of the Cretaceous period around 70 million years ago. • 10 - Along with its fellow plant-eaters, the Triceratops was doomed by the loss of its accustomed vegetation, as clouds of dust circled the globe because of the K/T Extinction catastrophe and blotted out the sun. Vegetation started to die, which means all of the plants and trees started to disappear and herbivores like Tricertops and other started to die due to lack of food. • Other Dot Dot Toys Videos: • WOW!
