Copyright Infringement, more commonly referred to as Piracy, has been an issue in the entertainment industry for over two decades. Going back as early as 2001, platforms like Napster, LimeWire, and other BitTorrent applications exploded in popularity giving people the tools to download music, movies, games, and software for free—illegally… • A lot has changed since the early 2000s especially with legit major media conglomerates shifting fully to streaming and ditching physical copies. Video games and other forms of media were all moving in a more digital direction anyway, which is great, but it’s been a financial battle for the majority of streaming platforms. Netflix and Disney are the only legit services turning a profit, while an estimated $71 billion is lost in annual revenue for all media companies due to pirated content. So, it’s not a surprise they’re working alongside U.S. government agencies to encourage a crackdown. But It’s also not a surprise why people are using illegal streaming sites now more than ever. 123Movies, FMovies, and Stream East are just some of the big ones that U.S. law enforcement has, or is currently targeting. • The popular sites 123Movies and FMovies pre-shutdown operated in Vietnam. There is speculation that the owners of Stream East are in Russia or on the East Coast of the United States, but as of now, it’s a mystery. With over 15 million monthly visitors, StreamEast has quickly risen to the top of Governments list, becoming a main priority to takedown. Recently, the government was able to seize SteamEasts’ main site and several backup domains, but similar to Pirate Bay in the early years, they weren’t rattled at all. Soon after this took place according to their social media, they knew it was coming and had fully prepared for it. • The first post Stream East made on X addressed the incident with a picture of its seized homepage and a caption stating, “Never give up. Never stop fighting. Never pay for sports. Stream East 2024 and beyond.” They followed it up in a second post revealing that the Feds apparently made an offer to its affiliates, but in their words, no offer is as good as free sports 365 days a year. • The main problem for studios like motion pictures is pretty clear: there’s too much lost revenue. But it’s not just the big corporations feeling the hit. Small-time producers get the worst of it. And while it’s true that piracy leads to job cuts and fewer opportunities in the industry, the real issue is the financial strain it puts on everyone involved leading to less content for people to enjoy. • This is part of the reason streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney have cracked down on password sharing, trying to drive up subscribers and revenue. Which is also a major contributor to viewers avoiding their services so it's not a shock that illegal streaming sites have spiked in traffic during this time. In the end we’ll most likely see more and more attempts to shut down the illegal sites, and more and more illegal sites gaining popularity to fill the gaps. So when one gets seized, we’ll just be another until an actual solution is put into place. • • ⌛ Outline: • 00:00 Intro • 01:46 Chapter 1: The Rise of Illegal Streaming Sites • 02:44 Chapter 2: How Illegal Streaming Sites Operate • 07:17 Chapter 3: Biggest Illegal Streaming Sites Shutdown • 09:32 Chapter 4: Conclusion Takeaways • 11:02 Outro • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ • Sources: • https://torrentfreak.com/music-piracy... • https://torrentfreak.com/feds-seize-d... • https://techreport.com/news/us-author... • https://techreport.com/news/4-illegal... • https://x.com/StreameastNews/status/1... • https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/123Movies • https://www.the-sun.com/tech/12331995... • https://www.forbes.com/sites/emmawool... • https://www.alliance4creativity.com/n... • • A lot of time is spent researching, writing and editing these videos, if it made you say, Well That's Something please consider supporting the channel. • Check out the Channel, new videos every two weeks! •    / @wellthatssomething
