2025 GMC Terrain AT4, Engine, Transmission and Performance Review. • Engine, Transmission and Performance • The Terrain comes standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. We haven't tested it yet, but we tested the engine against its mechanical twin, the Chevrolet Equinox; it took 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. • Terrain provides passengers with a comfortable and engaging driving experience. While the softly sprung suspension is a boon on long highway trips, the comfort-oriented setup saps the compact crossover's driver engagement once the asphalt gets twisty. Likewise, the direct but sweet steering, which makes turning at low speeds easy, proves as uninformative as a mafia boss in a police interrogation room. • Interior, Comfort and Cargo. • The spacious and accommodating interior is let down by subpar build quality and a middling materials mix. Meanwhile, the Terrain's ergonomically challenged push-button shifter rubs salt in the compact crossover's interior wounds. It consists of a few switches that look like power window controls, located low on the center console and less than intuitive to use. • While this is something we think owners will get used to over time, we found that the small buttons were hard to find at a glance—especially when looking for reverse—making it difficult to perform three-point turns quickly or operate the transmission's manual mode. • Terrain is a suitable partner for transporting large loads of various sizes. Get standard 60/40 folding rear seats, as well as available fold-flat front seats. The Terrain's cargo area offers competitive class space. In our carry-on test, the Terrain accommodated 24 suitcases with the rear seats folded; those looking for maximum cargo space will be better served—if only slightly—by the CR-V. • #gmcterrain
