Lancelets, also known as Amphioxus or Branchiostomes, are sea-dwelling animals that look quite unremarkable. But they're actually living fossils, very similar to organisms that emerged 540 million years ago. They are cephalochordates making these simple creatures similar to the ancient ancestors of all vertebrates, including humans.
