The varnam Kanakangi is composed in Raga Todi and set to Kanda jati Atta tala of fourteen beats (divided as 5+5+2+2). It is a composition of Pallavi Gopala Iyer (c. 1750–1820). • Todi is an extremely popular raga in South Indian classical music and also a very traditional raga. It is the 8th of the 72 melakarta ragas (parent scales) of Carnatic music. It is a challenging raga to play owing to the rich embellishments and ornamentations (gamakas) for the different notes and sophisticated musical phrases. It is a majestic raga that evokes emotions of sorrow, devotion, and affection.
