After 963, on the initiative of duke Mieszko I, fortifications in the form of wooden and earthen ramparts were built on the southern part of the island. Inside the fortifications, next to the wooden farm buildings, two free-standing brick buildings were erected: the prince's palatium (palace) with a chapel and the stronghold church. The island was connected to the mainland by bridges built around 963/964: the western (approx. 440 m long) and the eastern (approx. 170 m long). The bridges were made of wooden beams supported on piles driven into the bottom of the lake and were approx. 6 meters wide. The most important building on the island was a two-story palatium built on a rectangular plan. The building was rebuilt twice: for the first time by Bolesław the Brave around 1000 (in the pre-Romanesque style), and then in the 12th century (Romanesque style). The chapel attached to the palatium contained pools used for baptismal liturgy. Near the palatium with the chapel there was another brick building - the stronghold church. It was located in the northern part of the stronghold, near the rampart and the entrance gate. During archaeological research, two stone tombs were discovered on the church grounds, probable burial places of the princely family (possibly descendants of Mieszko I or Bolesław the Brave). Near the stronghold church, during excavations in 1962, a staurotheca was found, a reliquary intended to store fragments of wood from the cross of Christ. Researchers link this monument to Mieszko I (a gift from emperor Otto I, perhaps on the occasion of his baptism?) or Bolesław the Brave (a gift from emperor Otto III on the occasion of his visit in 1000). From the beginning of its existence, the stronghold on Ostrów Lednicki had the status of a centre of princely (later royal) power and one of the main sacral centres of the state. The invasion of the Czech prince Bretislav in 1038 caused great material losses. Although it was rebuilt (including the construction of new ramparts, which still exist today), the stronghold lost its significance. At the end of the 14th century, it was abandoned and forgotten. The stronghold owes its current state of preservation to a number of archaeological and reconstruction works undertaken in the mid-19th century and carried out to this day. • Moraczewo: • The stronghold in the area of today's village of Moraczewo is considered one of the oldest early medieval settlements built in Greater Poland by the ancestors of the Piast dynasty (or their predecessors). The first fortified settlement was built in the early 10th century and consisted of a stone-wood-earth defensive rampart and a moat surrounding the top of a natural hillock among the surrounding marshes. There were also open settlements around the stronghold. In the second quarter of the 10th century, the stronghold was expanded by building a second - slightly lower - part on the eastern side. The entire enlarged complex was surrounded by a moat. The initiator of the expansion was probably the father (or grandfather) of Mieszko I. The stronghold burned down in the second half of the 10th century and was never rebuilt. To this day, legible ramparts have been preserved in the terrain, especially in the higher (older) western section. • 🎵 The piece Angevin - Thatched Villagers (author: Kevin MacLeod) is available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... • Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-... • Artist: http://incompetech.com/
